Tip Calculator
Calculate gratuity and split bills easily. Determine tip amount and total cost per person.
Using the Tip Calculator allows you to quickly and fairly handle the check at a restaurant, bar, or salon, ensuring you support service workers while accurately splitting the cost among friends. Follow these steps:
Step 1: Enter the Total Bill amount exactly as it appears on the receipt.
Step 2: Choose your Tip Percentage. Standard options usually include 15% (Standard), 18% (Good), and 20% (Excellent). You can also enter a custom percentage if desired.
Step 3: Enter the Number of People who are splitting the bill. If you are paying alone, leave this as 1.
Step 4: Click "Calculate."
Step 5: Review the results. The calculator will show you the exact Tip Amount, the new Total Bill including the tip, and—most importantly—the "Per Person" amount. This tells everyone exactly how much they need to contribute to the final payment, eliminating the awkward "who owes what" math at the end of a meal.
The Tip Calculator uses basic percentage arithmetic and linear division to resolve the final bill.
The formulas used are: 1. Tip Amount = Bill Subtotal × (Tip % ÷ 100) 2. Total Bill = Bill Subtotal + Tip Amount 3. Amount Per Person = Total Bill ÷ Number of People
Example: A group of 4 people has a $120 bill and wants to leave a 18% tip. Calculation: Tip = 120 × 0.18 = $21.60. Total = 120 + 21.60 = $141.60. Per Person = 141.60 ÷ 4 = $35.40. Each person pays exactly $35.40 to cover their share of the meal and the gratuity.
The Tip Calculator is a social etiquette and financial management tool designed for the modern service economy. Tipping customs vary significantly by country and culture, but in many regions, gratuities represent a vital portion of a service worker's income. Attempting to calculate percentages and split bills manually after a long meal can be stressful and error-prone, often leading to people under-tipping or over-paying. By providing an instant, transparent breakdown of the costs, this tool ensures that service staff are fairly compensated and that group dining experiences remain harmonious and free from mathematical disputes. It also helps you stay within your personal budget by showing you the true cost of a meal (including gratuity) before you reach for your wallet.
