Your annual plastic footprint is calculated in three steps:
Step 1 — Weekly Plastic Weight (grams): Each item type is multiplied by its standard average weight based on UNEP and packaging studies, then all categories are summed:
Weekly grams = (Bottles × 20) + (Bags × 5) + (Wrappers × 2.5) + (Yogurt Cups × 8) + (Cotton Swabs × 0.5) + (Detergent Bottles × 60)

Step 2 — Annual Total (grams): Annual grams = Weekly grams × 52
Step 3 — Convert to Kilograms: Annual kg = Annual grams ÷ 1000
Example: Bottles = 7, Bags = 5, Wrappers = 10, Yogurt = 3, Cotton swabs = 10, Detergent = 1 Weekly grams = (7×20) + (5×5) + (10×2.5) + (3×8) + (10×0.5) + (1×60) = 140 + 25 + 25 + 24 + 5 + 60 = 279 g Annual grams = 279 × 52 = 14,508 g Final result = 14,508 ÷ 1,000 = 14.51 kg/year → Moderate Plastic Footprint

A plastic footprint measures how much plastic waste a single person generates through their everyday purchasing and consumption habits. Unlike carbon footprints, which are dominated by invisible emissions, your plastic footprint is tangible — it is the physical pile of bottles, bags, wrappers, and containers that passes through your hands each week.
Plastic has become one of the defining environmental challenges of the modern era. Since the 1950s, more than 8 billion tonnes of plastic have been produced globally, and a significant fraction of that ends up in landfills, rivers, and oceans. Single-use plastics — the items this calculator focuses on — are particularly problematic because their useful lifespan is often just minutes, yet they persist in the environment for hundreds of years.
What makes plastic pollution especially damaging is its tendency to fragment rather than decompose. Over time, UV radiation and mechanical abrasion break large plastics into microplastics — particles smaller than 5 millimetres — which have now been detected in drinking water, seafood, soil, and even the human bloodstream. The ecological cascade effect is significant: marine animals ingest plastic fragments, mistaking them for food, and the toxins associated with plastic accumulate further up the food chain.
