The conversion between 12-hour and 24-hour formats follows two straightforward rules:

12-Hour → 24-Hour (Military Time): - If the time is 12:xx AM → 24h Hour = 00 - If the time is 1–11 AM → 24h Hour = Hour (unchanged) - If the time is 12:xx PM → 24h Hour = 12 (unchanged) - If the time is 1–11 PM → 24h Hour = Hour + 12

Example — Converting 3:45 PM: 24h Hour = 3 + 12 = 15 → Result: 15:45

Example — Converting 12:30 AM: 24h Hour = 00 → Result: 00:30

Military time, also known as the 24-hour clock, is a timekeeping system in which the day runs continuously from midnight (00:00) to just before midnight again (23:59), with no repetition of hours and no need for AM or PM designators. Rather than cycling twice through 1–12, military time cycles once through 0–23, making each moment of the day uniquely identifiable.

The system takes its common name from its widespread use in military operations, where ambiguity in time communication can have serious consequences. When coordinating across multiple time zones, shifts, or operational phases, a time like "6:00" is inherently ambiguous — but 06:00 and 18:00 are not. The same clarity makes military time the standard in aviation, maritime navigation, hospitals, emergency services, and scientific contexts worldwide.

In everyday civilian life across most of the world — particularly in Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa — the 24-hour clock is simply the standard format used on timetables, digital displays, and official documents. The 12-hour AM/PM system is most prevalent in the United States, Canada, Australia, and a few other countries, which is why conversion tools like this one are frequently needed.

Military time is read differently from civilian 24-hour time. In the military, 14:30 is spoken as "fourteen thirty" and 0800 as "zero eight hundred hours." In everyday 24-hour usage, the colon is standard and times are read more casually. Regardless of pronunciation, the underlying numeric values are identical — making conversion straightforward arithmetic.
