Sand volume is calculated in two steps:
Volume (cubic feet) = Area (sq ft) × Depth (inches) / 12
Volume (cubic yards) = Volume (cubic feet) / 27
Bags needed = ⌈Volume (cubic yards) × 54⌉
The factor 54 comes from the fact that a standard 50 lb bag of sand fills approximately 0.5 cubic feet, and 1 cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet — so 27 / 0.5 = 54 bags per cubic yard.
A properly installed sand layer is the hidden foundation of every long-lasting paved surface. Whether you are laying a driveway, a garden path, a patio, or a parking area, the sand bed performs two critical jobs: it provides a level screed surface that makes precise paver placement possible, and it allows very slight adjustments during installation so each stone or block sits perfectly flat.
Not all sand types are equal for paving applications. Sharp sand — also called coarse sand or builder's sand — is the preferred bedding material. Its angular, irregular particles interlock under compaction and resist lateral movement, creating a stable, load-bearing base. Fine or soft sand, by contrast, shifts too easily and is not suitable for structural use under pavers.
For the joints between pavers, polymeric sand is the modern professional choice. It contains a binding agent that activates with water and then hardens, effectively locking pavers in place, preventing weed growth through the gaps, and resisting washout from rain or pressure washing. Standard jointing sand can work for low-traffic areas, but polymeric sand significantly increases the durability and lifespan of a paved surface.
Installation order matters: start with a compact aggregate base (crushed stone is most common), wet and compact it flat, then spread and screed the sand layer to the desired depth. Set the pavers, then sweep dry polymeric sand into the joints, mist with water to activate, and allow to cure before use.
