The Mathematical Formula
Mass % = (Mass of Solute / Total Mass of Solution) × 100

Mass percent is calculated using a straightforward ratio:

Mass % = (Mass of Component / Total Mass) × 100

For a solute dissolved in a solvent: Total Mass = Mass of Solute + Mass of Solvent Mass % = (Mass of Solute / Total Mass) × 100

For a component in a compound: Mass % = (Mass of Component / Mass of Compound) × 100

For percent composition from a chemical formula, each element's contribution is: Element % = (Number of Atoms × Atomic Mass) / Molar Mass of Compound × 100

About Mass Percent Calculator

Mass percent (also written as mass percentage or weight percent, w/w%) is a way of expressing how much of a particular component is present in a mixture or solution, relative to the total mass. It answers a simple but critical question: out of every 100 grams of this substance, how many grams are made up of this component?

For solutions, mass percent describes the ratio of solute mass to total solution mass. For example, a 17.7% hydrochloric acid solution means that for every 100 g of solution, 17.7 g is HCl and the rest is water. This is one of the most practical concentration units used in chemistry and industry because it does not depend on temperature — unlike molarity, which changes as liquids expand or contract with heat.

Mass percent and percent composition are related but distinct ideas. Mass percent typically refers to a single component in a mixture, while percent composition lists the mass percentage of every element in a compound. For NaCl, the percent composition is about 39.3% sodium and 60.7% chlorine — two separate values that together represent the full makeup of the compound.

In practical applications, mass percent appears everywhere: food labels list nutrient percentages by mass, pharmaceutical formulations specify drug concentrations by weight, and industrial chemicals are sold with labeled w/w% purity.
